Transcription of the LAST WILL of James Gardner

William and Oney Gardner's Gravesite

It is said that John Gardner was lost at sea around New York State or on way back to England and that he married Luzelle __? from France. It is believed that John Gardner died at sea right after his son, James was born.

It is my belief that John's parents could be John Gardner and Christianna Finch who lived in Scotchtown,Orange County, New York. This would show John, Jr.'s spouse to be a HUTCHINGS.  He would have drowned in the Hackensack River and was a Colonel in Ann HawkHay's Regiment of Orange County, New York Militia.

The surname GARDNER is found among the founders and settlers of the first Puritan settlement, Cape Ann & Naumkeag, 1623-1627. Source: The Winthrop Society.

James Gardner, John's son, was b. April 26, 1758 in Fishkill Township Duchess Co, NY d. April 21, 1849 in Hillsville Carroll Co.,VA. James m. Tabitha Martin in Franklin Co, VA May 20, 1797.

From GARDNER Family Group Sheet..."In 1777 James Gardner enlisted in the American Revolution from New York and helped establish our independence from Great Britain while acting as a private. He served several short terms. In 1777 he served three months under Capt. Sessions and was wounded by a rifle ball during an engagement on Staten Island, New York. During the same year he served two months in Capt. McConley's Co., Col. Hawthorne's Regiment. In 1777 he served one month under Capt. Seward and went out against the Indians. In 1780 he served three weeks under Capt. Rusdale (?); in the next year he served under Capt. Seward at the siege at Yorktown where he was shot through the leg. ...".
